Here is the latest SEC sports news from The Associated Press - Beckley Register-Herald

DALLAS (AP) — The third in-person meeting of conference commissioners who manage the College Football Playoff since August ended without a resolution on expansion, but not without optimism. The CFP management committee, comprised of 10 major college football conference commissioners and Notre Dame’s athletic director, met for six hours. They worked on a plan to triple the number of playoff teams from four to 12 for the 2024 season. Playoff Executive Director Bill Hancock says the work is ‘not finished’ and that time is running short.

UNDATED (AP) — Rebound is on the minds of players from No. 6 Alabama and No. 24 Mississippi State when they meet Saturday night in Tuscaloosa. The Crimson Tide are coming off a 52-49 loss at then-No. 7 Tennessee, where they were flagged 17 times for 130 yards yet still had a chance to win. Alabama’s Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Bryce Young provided a bright spot, throwing for 455 yards and two touchdowns against the Volunteers. Will Rogers also looks to lead the Bulldogs back after falling 27-17 at then-No. 22 Kentucky to halt a three-game winning streak.

ATLANTA (AP) — Top-ranked defending national champion Georgia is far from assured of a return trip to the Southeastern Conference championship game. The SEC East is making its biggest AP Top 25 power move since Florida’s Steve Spurrier and Tennessee’s Phillip Fulmer ruled the division 25 years ago. And Georgia is facing a grueling series of games in the second half of the season. Led by Georgia and No. 3 Tennessee, the East Division boasts two of the top three teams in the country for the first time since Sept. 2, 1997. In that AP Top 25 poll, No. 2 Florida was one spot ahead of No. 3 Tennessee.

UNDATED (AP) — Mississippi State once again is catching Alabama on the rebound. The sixth-ranked Crimson Tide is coming off a loss on a last-play field goal entering Saturday’s game against the 24th-ranked Bulldogs. Alabama won last year’s meeting 49-9 in a similar scenario. Mississippi State is also trying to bounce back from a loss to No. 19 Kentucky. The Bulldogs are grieving the death this week of freshman offensive lineman Sam Westmoreland.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — New goalposts are in place and ready for kickoff Saturday at Neyland Stadium. The third-ranked Tennessee Volunteers host UT Martin of the Football Championship Subdivision. Tennessee coach Josh Heupel says the challenge now is for the Volunteers to get better after last week’s huge win over Alabama The Vols are 6-0 and off to their best start since 1998 when they won the national championship. UT-Martin is 4-2 this season and a heavy underdog in a game that will bring more than $1 million to the school.

UNDATED (AP) — South Carolina hosts Texas A&M looking to win back-to-back Southeastern Conference games for the first time in coach Shane Beamer’s two seasons. The Gamecocks also are seeking their first-ever win against Texas A&M. The Aggies are out to end their two-game SEC losing streak. The key matchup is South Carolina quarterback Spencer Rattler against Texas A&M’s pass defense. Rattler has been up and down but is still averaging 227 yards per game through the air. The Aggies are second in SEC pass defense at 175 yards per game.

UNDATED (AP) — Vanderbilt and Missouri will be playing Saturday in an attempt to climb out of the SEC basement. The Commodores have allowed at least 50 points in consecutive losses to top-10 teams Georgia, Alabama and Ole Miss, while each of the Tigers’ three losses in conference play have come down to one possession. Vanderbilt has lost 24 consecutive conference games. Its last win came in October 2019, when it beat the Tigers 21-14 in Nashville, Tennessee.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — No. 4 Kentucky will open the season with high expectations and questions about injured star Oscar Tshiebwe. The 6-foot-9 Tsheibwe averaged 17.4 points and 15.1 rebounds per game last year and swept the major awards as the nation’s top player. The consensus All-American returned for his senior season to pursue a NCAA championship after a first-round loss in the tournament. He had a recent knee procedure and a timeline for his return has not been set.
